President Bola Tinubu has moved to shake up the nation’s security leadership by removing Kayode Egbetokun from his position as the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
In his place, the President has tapped Tunji Disu, an Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), to take over the mantle of leadership for the force.
The exit of the former police chief reportedly came after a direct order from the President, who called for his immediate resignation.
Details emerging from the Presidential Villa in Abuja suggest that the instruction was handed down during a private meeting between Tinubu and Egbetokun on Monday.
The outgoing IGP had been in the role since June 19, 2023, when he was first appointed by the President as the 22nd person to lead the force.
His position was later solidified on October 31, 2023, when the Nigeria Police Council formally confirmed his substantive appointment.
While Egbetokun reached the helm at 58 and was technically set to retire on September 4, 2024, at the age of 60, his time in office was marked by a controversial tenure extension granted by the President.
