President Donald Trump has officially extended the April 5 deadline for TikTok to be sold to a U.S.-based buyer, citing ongoing progress toward a deal.
The U.S. government initially approved the sale of the popular short-video platform due to concerns over potential hacking and data breaches linked to its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.
Speaking on Friday, President Trump stated that his administration has been working hard to secure an agreement and emphasized that “tremendous progress” had been made.
In a Truth Social post, Trump noted the deal “requires more work to ensure all necessary approvals are signed.”
To allow for continued negotiations, the President confirmed he had signed an Executive Order permitting TikTok to operate for an additional 75 days.
“We hope to continue working in good faith with China, who I understand are not very happy about our reciprocal tariffs,” Trump wrote.
“This proves that tariffs are the most powerful economic tool, and very important to our national security. We do not want TikTok to ‘go dark’.”
Trump further stated that his administration looks forward to working with both TikTok and the Chinese government to finalize the deal.
Among the current bidders are Amazon, led by Jeff Bezos; a consortium headed by OnlyFans founder Tim Stokely; mobile tech firm AppLovin; and a group that includes Oracle.
