President Donald Trump has stirred fresh controversy by expressing interest in running against Barack Obama in a future presidential race, despite constitutional limitations barring a third term.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Monday, Trump responded to a question about a hypothetical face-off with Obama, who served two terms as president from 2009 to 2017.
“That would be a good one, I’d like that,” Trump said.
Trump, 78, previously served as the 45th U.S. president from 2017 to 2021 and claimed victory in the 2024 election, returning for a second term. However, he has continued to suggest he may seek a third term—an idea barred by the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which limits presidents to two terms.
In a separate interview with NBC News on Sunday, Trump doubled down on his stance, saying:
“Not joking,” when asked about his comments regarding a potential third term.
Despite legal and constitutional hurdles, Trump maintains that a large segment of Americans support the idea of him staying in office beyond the traditional two-term limit.
