President Donald Trump has officially withdrawn the nomination of Representative Elise Stefanik for the position of U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
Stefanik, a prominent Republican lawmaker from New York, has been a key ally of Trump and was initially considered a frontrunner for the high-profile diplomatic role.
Trump made the announcement on Thursday via a statement posted on his Truth Social platform, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the Republican Party’s narrow lead in the House of Representatives.
“I have asked Elise, as one of my biggest allies, to remain in Congress to help me deliver historic tax cuts, great jobs, record economic growth, a secure border, energy dominance, peace through strength, and much more, so we can make America great again.
With a very tight majority, I don’t want to take a chance on anyone else running for Elise’s seat. The people love Elise and, with her, we have nothing to worry about come election day. There are others that can do a good job at the United Nations,” Trump said.
Earlier reports by CBS News indicated that Stefanik faced mounting pressure to step away from the nomination, despite her strong bipartisan support in the Senate that would have likely secured her confirmation.
The outlet noted that the House GOP’s razor-thin majority played a significant role in the decision-making process, with concerns that losing Stefanik’s seat could weaken the party’s legislative strength.
