French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday voiced support for Spain after US President Donald Trump threatened to “terminate all trades” with the country.
According to French newspaper Le Parisien, Macron held a telephone conversation with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to reaffirm France’s commitment to “European solidarity” in the face of economic pressure from the United States directed at Spain.
Trump reportedly made the threat after Spain refused to allow the use of its military base for possible operations against Iran.
Reacting to the development, Sanchez rejected the warning from Washington, insisting that Spain would not bow to “reprisals from anyone”.
Sanchez made the remarks while speaking to citizens in a nationwide broadcast on Wednesday.
