The Yobe State Government has ordered the closure of all boarding secondary schools as a precautionary measure to protect students amid escalating security concerns.
The directive was issued on Saturday by Governor Mai Mala Buni following a security meeting with heads of security agencies in the state, aimed at reviewing recent attacks targeting schools in other regions.
The announcement was made through a statement signed by Mohammed Mamman, Director General of Press and Media Affairs to the Governor, and released to reporters.
According to the statement, the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has circulated a notice mandating the immediate shutdown of all boarding secondary schools.
“A notice signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Bukar Aji Bukar, directed immediate closure of all secondary schools pending improvement in the situation,” the statement read.
Mamman added that Governor Buni called on residents to support ongoing security efforts through prayers.
“Governor Buni urged the people of the state to pray for the leadership, security operatives, peace, and improved security in the country,” the statement said.
Yobe joins several other northern states that have closed boarding facilities following recent kidnappings and attacks on schools.
Reports indicate that several students from St. Mary’s School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State, were abducted by terrorists on Friday. The incident occurred just days after a similar attack in Maga, Kebbi State, where 25 students were kidnapped, highlighting concerns over the worsening security situation in educational institutions across the region.
