Didier Deschamps, France’s head coach, claimed his team “didn’t play as well as we could” as they were eliminated from Euro 2024.
Deschamps also stated that Kylian Mbappe “didn’t perform as well as he usually does”.
Les Bleus have exited the competition after losing 2-1 to Spain in Tuesday’s semi-final.
France entered the competition as favourites, but scored only one goal in open play.
Mbappe in particular struggled to make an impact, as the Real Madrid attacker appeared to be limited by a broken nose in the encounter against Austria.
“I will not say my players didn’t give their all, but we didn’t play as well as we could for various reasons,” Deschamps told the crowd.
“Kylian did not perform as well as he often does. I am not making excuses. We did our best with what we had and worked as efficiently as possible.”
