Former England striker John Fashanu is taking legal action against the Nigerian Police, suing for £100,000 following his arrest on multiple charges, including criminal conspiracy, threat to life, intimidation, and trespassing.
The 62-year-old vehemently denies these allegations, which stem from a land dispute over his 22-acre plot. Investors had reportedly agreed to pay over £500,000 for the land.
According to The Mirror, Fashanu was detained after questioning contractors who were constructing a fence on his property.
Fashanu claims that he, his wife Vivian, and their lawyer were subjected to “arrest, detention, and inhuman treatment” for approximately three hours on December 16.
He further accused the police of infringing upon his rights through “subsequent intermittent constraints on his personal liberty” and a “gross unconstitutional violation.”
Fashanu’s lawyer, Mr. Chigbu, confirmed that: “All three have met their bail conditions and have been admitted to administrative bail by the police.”
Known for his time at Norwich City, Wimbledon, and Aston Villa, Fashanu was a key figure in Wimbledon’s 1988 FA Cup victory and earned two caps for England.
