Yassine Cheuko, the well-known personal bodyguard of Inter Miami star Lionel Messi, has revealed that Major League Soccer (MLS) has restricted his duties, limiting his ability to fully protect the football icon during matches.
Cheuko, a former Navy SEAL, has been by Messi’s side since the Argentine legend made his high-profile move to the United States in 2023. Given Messi’s global fame and the intense fan interest in the U.S., personal security was deemed necessary.
Cheuko gained public attention for his quick reactions during games, often sprinting across the pitch to intercept fans attempting to approach Messi. On numerous occasions, he successfully stopped pitch invaders before they could get near the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.
However, MLS has recently placed new limitations on Cheuko’s role, barring him from appearing on the pitch during games.
“They don’t allow me to be on the field anymore,” Cheuko told House of Highlights.
Addressing the challenges of protecting Messi in the United States compared to Europe, Cheuko highlighted the stark contrast in fan behavior.
“I was in Europe for seven years working for Ligue 1 and the Champions League, and only six people invaded the pitch.
I arrived in the United States, and in 20 months of work, 16 people have already invaded the pitch. There’s a huge problem here. I’m not the problem. Let me help Messi.”
Despite the restrictions, Cheuko continues to serve as Messi’s security off the field, focusing on his protection in public appearances and behind the scenes.
