Fenerbahçe’s José Mourinho is reportedly close to replacing Roberto Martínez as the manager of Portugal, according to CNN.
In a surprising development, Mourinho could be reunited with Cristiano Ronaldo, with whom he previously worked at Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013.
The Portuguese Football Federation is reportedly considering Mourinho to take over the role, with the appointment expected to happen this summer.
Despite any past tension between them from their time in Spain, it is not believed that coaching Ronaldo will be a problem for Mourinho.
Taking on the national team now would give Mourinho plenty of time to prepare for the 2026 World Cup in North America.
Portugal’s advancement to the Nations League semi-finals in June is said to not have interfered with the ongoing talks.
Martínez is expected to oversee that match, along with either the third-place play-off or the final that follows, but the decision to make the managerial change is reportedly set to be finalized afterward.
