Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper, André Onana, has opened up about the clubs that tried to secure his signature before his eventual move to Old Trafford.
The Cameroonian shot-stopper joined Manchester United in July 2023 in a high-profile £47.2 million transfer from Inter Milan, where he had spent just one season.
Before his stint in Italy, Onana made a name for himself at Ajax, where he spent six successful seasons, winning three Eredivisie titles and establishing himself as one of Europe’s top goalkeepers.
In a recent interview with Le Média Carré, Onana disclosed that Arsenal and Chelsea had shown genuine interest in signing him while he was still at Ajax.
“I had Monaco, I had Nice, I had Atlético Madrid, I had Chelsea, Arsenal.”
When asked which club came closest to signing him during his time in the Dutch league, he revealed:
“Lyon. I spoke with the president and the technical director, so it was advanced anyway.
“It was difficult for me to speak with the president because I had decided to learn Italian.”
Despite the interest from multiple top European clubs, Onana chose to take his talents to Serie A before making the leap to the Premier League with Manchester United, where he has since become a key figure in the squad.
