Real Madrid Reject Alonso’s Bid to Keep Modric

Real Madrid have reportedly denied incoming manager Xabi Alonso’s request to retain veteran midfielder Luka Modric at the club beyond this season.

According to Spanish outlet Diario AS, Alonso, who is set to take over as manager, expressed his desire to keep Modric for at least another season, but the club hierarchy turned down the proposal.

Modric is expected to play his final LaLiga match for Real Madrid when they face Real Sociedad on the last day of the season this Saturday. The 39-year-old will officially leave the club following the conclusion of their FIFA Club World Cup campaign this summer.

The Croatian maestro joined Real Madrid from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in 2012. Over the past 12 years, Modric has established himself as one of the most successful and respected players in the club’s history.

His illustrious career with Los Blancos includes 28 major trophies, among them six UEFA Champions League titles and four LaLiga championships. He was also awarded the Ballon d’Or in 2018, becoming the first player in a decade to break the Messi-Ronaldo dominance.

Tributes have poured in from both current and former Real Madrid teammates, celebrating Modric’s contributions and leadership.

Despite his age, Modric is still expected to represent Croatia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, underlining his enduring quality and commitment to the game.
