Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola set an unwanted record on Wednesday after his side’s defeat to Real Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie.
The Spaniard watched as Madrid secured a dominant 3–0 victory over the Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
Midfielder Federico Valverde scored all three goals of the match to hand the Spanish LaLiga side a strong advantage ahead of the return leg scheduled for next week.
However, statistics platform Opta noted that the result means Guardiola has now equalled his heaviest defeat in the first leg of a UEFA Champions League knockout tie.
According to the record, the 3–0 loss matches previous first-leg defeats he suffered against FC Barcelona in the 2014–15 semi-finals and Liverpool FC in the 2017–18 quarter-finals.
Guardiola’s team will now turn their attention to the Premier League as they prepare for their next fixture against West Ham United this weekend.
