The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has rebutted claims of a data breach. Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, clarified this in a statement on Saturday.
Recent reports alleged that certain websites were attempting to sell Nigerian citizens’ data. However, NIMC assured the public that there has been no compromise of Nigerians’ data.
The Commission cautioned against sharing personal data with unauthorized phishing websites.
“NIMC assures the public that Nigerians’ data remains secure and has not been compromised. The Commission has not authorized any entity to sell or misuse the National Identification Number (NIN) or any related identities mentioned in the reports.
“Websites such as idfinder.com.ng, Verify.Ng/sign in, championtech.com.ng, trustyonline.com, and anyverify.com are unauthorized data harvesters. NIMC advises the public to disregard any claims or services offered by these websites and refrain from providing their data, as they may be involved in fraudulent activities. Data provided on such sites is collected and stored illegally.
“The Commission has implemented stringent measures to safeguard the nation’s database from cyber threats, including maintaining a secure, world-class database that meets ISO 27001:2013 Information Security Management System Standard. We also adhere strictly to Nigerian Data Protection Law.
“NIMC urges Nigerians to avoid unauthorized and phishing sites to prevent data harvesting and potential compromise of personal information.
“We reaffirm our commitment to upholding ethical standards in data protection, as directed by the federal government and in compliance with data privacy regulations. Authorized partners or vendors are strictly prohibited from scanning or storing NIN slips, only verifying NINs through approved channels.
“The Commission is collaborating with law enforcement agencies to apprehend these fraudulent entities posing as online vendors, who will face legal consequences.
“We urge the public to rely on verified sources for accurate updates and remain vigilant against misinformation. NIMC remains steadfast in providing secure and reliable identity management, ensuring the highest security standards for national systems and databases,” the statement concluded.
