Following the announcement of the 2024 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) results, the West African Examination Council (WAEC) disclosed that the results of 215,267 applicants are being withheld due to numerous alleged incidences of examination malpractice.
A total of 1,805,216 candidates took the examination from 25,126 secondary schools in Nigeria.
Out of all the applicants who sat the exam, 1,685,889 (93.39 percent) have had all of their papers released, while 119,327 (6.61%) still have some subjects being processed.
The council stated that this is a 4.37 percent decline from the 16.29 percent seen in the 2023 WASSCE for school applicants.
In terms of performance, 1,332,089 candidates (73.79%) received credit or above in at least five courses (with or without English and/or Mathematics).
Additionally, 1,301,941 candidates (72.12 percent) received credit or higher in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
When comparing year-on-year data for this category, the 2024 WASSCE revealed a 7.69 percent reduction from the 79.81 percent pass rate recorded in 2023.
