Popular comedian Oluwaseyitan Aletile, better known as Seyi Law, has stated that most of Nigeria’s past presidents have consistently tried to appease the northern region of the country.
He made this assertion during a recent interview with Teju Babyface on the Deep Dive podcast.
While discussing Nigeria’s political dynamics, Seyi Law accused the nation’s former leaders of focusing their political strategies on satisfying one region, assuming that other parts of the country would be more liberal in their expectations.
He explained: “I supported Jonathan in 2014, but that doesn’t mean everything he did was right. There was a lot of corruption under Jonathan’s administration, but he did one thing I admired—attempting to fight corruption with technology, rather than just relying on words.”
He continued, “But when Jonathan needed to assert his authority as president, he played politics to please one side of the country, believing that the other side would be more forgiving, which frustrates me in Nigerian politics.”
Seyi Law went on to say, “A lot of our past presidents have always tried to placate the North. That’s why in 2014, when Jonathan was campaigning, after people had advised him to take certain actions and he didn’t, and then started distributing money for his campaign, people felt this was their compensation—and they didn’t do the necessary work to support him.”
