On Monday, President Vladimir Putin signed a law that formally approves a strategic partnership agreement between Russia and Iran, following approval from both houses of Russia’s parliament.
The upper house of parliament, the Federation Council, passed the agreement on 16 April, after it was ratified by the State Duma, the lower house, on 8 April.
This 20-year partnership aims to strengthen cooperation between Russia and Iran across various sectors, with an option for automatic five-year extensions thereafter.
The agreement covers areas such as trade, banking, transportation, energy, peaceful nuclear energy, arms control, and the fight against international terrorism.
The Federation Council, after the ratification, announced that Russia and Iran would enhance their collaboration in security and defense, as well as closely coordinate their efforts at both regional and global levels.
The strategic partnership agreement was signed by President Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Moscow on 17 January.
Following the signing, Putin emphasized that the document sets out a framework for a long-term alliance between Moscow and Tehran, spanning trade, investment, and other sectors.
He described the agreement as a “breakthrough document” that would lay the foundation for “the stable and sustainable development of Russia, Iran, and the broader Eurasian region.”
