A High Court sitting in Kano has sentenced two men to death by hanging for the killing of a newly married man during a robbery attack.
The court convicted Aliyu Hussaini and Amir Zakariyya on charges of conspiracy, armed robbery, and culpable homicide in connection with the death of Yazid Haruna.
According to the prosecution, the incident happened on June 11, 2025, at about 2:47 a.m. in the Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters area of Kano.
The prosecutor, Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, told the court that the defendants armed themselves with long knives and machetes before launching the attack on the victim.
“They robbed the victim of his two mobile phones and N19,500 and stabbed him in the stomach, chest and head, which led to his death,” the prosecutor said.
To establish its case, the state called three witnesses and tendered medical reports as evidence before the court. However, both defendants denied any involvement in the crime.
The prosecutor further stated that their offences contravened Sections 97(1), 298(c), and 221(a) of the Penal Code Laws of Kano State.
Counsel to the defendants, Haruna Saleh-Zakariyya, appealed to the court for leniency after presenting them to testify in their own defence.
In her ruling, Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu held that the prosecution had successfully proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. “The action of the defendants is inhuman. The robbery of phones has become rampant,” the judge said.
She subsequently sentenced each of the convicts to one year imprisonment for conspiracy and life imprisonment for armed robbery, before handing down the death penalty by hanging for culpable homicide.
