Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors for their opposition and for potentially aiding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 election.
The statement from the coalition came in response to the PDP Governors’ Forum’s resolution on April 14, where they expressed their opposition to the creation of a broad-based coalition of opposition political parties.
Salihu Moh Lukman, the spokesman for the coalition, stated, “The coalition is a viable option not only for defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Tinubu, but also for saving Nigeria’s democracy from imminent collapse.”
He added, “For over 10 years, the PDP has been out of power, and Nigerians have patiently awaited the party’s revival to provide the strong opposition that the country needs. Instead, the party has been stagnant, while the Tinubu-led APC found a willing ally to help end its political relevance.”
Lukman continued, “The governors know that the issues plaguing the PDP are beyond repair. They are only putting on a show. Nigerians clearly see that this PDP is no longer a credible alternative because the ruling party has effectively taken control of it.”
He also called out Nyesom Wike, saying, “Wike is the untouchable super minister in Asiwaju’s government, not because of his remarkable work in the FCT, but because he has ensured that the PDP will not present a viable candidate to challenge Tinubu in 2027.”
“However, with the growing coalition, that mandate has shifted recently. The new plan is to revive the PDP as a counterbalance to the coalition and field a candidate who would split the vote in 2027. The PDP Governors’ Forum is knowingly or unknowingly playing the spoiler game for Asiwaju, and they expect Nigerians to take them seriously.”
