4 Dead, 36 Sick in Adamawa Cholera Outbreak

The Yola-North Local Government Area administration in Adamawa has declared an outbreak of cholera in the region.

This outbreak has so far claimed four lives, while 36 other persons are being treated in various local hospitals.

The Chairman of the council, Jibrin Ibrahim, told reporters this during his visit to the victims at the Infectious Disease Centre in Yola on Sunday.

The outbreak was recorded in the Alkalawa, Ajiya and Limawa wards in the area.

No less than 20 casualties were recorded in the morning, but the figure has already surpassed 40 cases with four deaths confirmed.

“A lot of them have been stabilised following the attention given by health workers,” he said.

Ibrahim lauded the quick response from healthcare workers, the Red Cross, as well as international partners.

He further added that the assumed outbreak is caused by contaminated water due to flooding in some areas.

He advised the public to always keep a clean environment, drink potable water, and to wash vegetables and fruits before consumption properly.

Last Wednesday, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention said the country recorded 7,663 suspected cholera cases across 35 states and the FCT, in 280 LGAs so far in 2024.
