Abducted Edo Catholic Priest Regains Freedom

Nine days after his abduction, Rev. Fr. Peter Ekweli, the Catholic Priest of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Ivukwa, in Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State, has regained his freedom.

However, the fate of the seminarian who was kidnapped alongside him, Peter Andrew, remains uncertain.

A viral video circulating on Thursday featured a kidnap victim surrounded by uniformed men, believed to be vigilantes. In the footage, the victim recounted a chilling account of the abduction.

He explained that they were all forced to close their eyes before hearing a gunshot.

“Then, they were told to open their eyes, and they saw the seminarian battling for his life before he died,” he said.

The victim also mentioned that they trekked to a location in Edo Central, from where he managed to escape.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, stated that the priest had been rescued by law enforcement.

“The police would soon come up with an official statement,” Yamu added.

Meanwhile, a source disclosed that the Catholic Church is expected to issue an official statement on Friday regarding the priest’s release.
