The Abia State Government has raised concern about the rise in vandalism against public schools and other public property in the state.
Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, expressed this attitude at Government House in Umuahia while addressing journalists on the results of this week’s executive council meeting.
He stated that the state government is not pleased with the situation.
Kanu asked traditional rulers, presidents of town unions, and other stakeholders to safeguard public property in their areas.
Kanu claimed that plans had been finalized to enforce the war on street trade and unauthorized motor parks in Umuahia and Aba.
He further announced that Governor Alex Otti will, on Thursday, launch the disbursement of one billion naira in interest-free revolving loans to 9,200 Abia citizens across 184 wards in the state. This initiative, part of the Abia State Cooperative Support Scheme, aims to help nano and micro businesses.
Also speaking at the briefing, Mr. Mike Akpara, Commissioner for Finance, denied reports that he collects 10 million naira from Abia State’s coffers on a monthly basis.
“I want to categorically state here that the Commissioner of Finance does not take home 10 million naira monthly. It’s not done anywhere.
“I also want to say that none of my colleagues take home such large sums of money; some reports claim they take home 5 million, and others 3 million naira monthly. He angrily denied it.
