Most shop owners in Anambra State, particularly in Onitsha, which serves as the commercial hub of the state, flouted the directive by Governor Charles Soludo that they should open their shops on Monday, warning that failure to do such would lead to the sealing of such companies.
Despite the fact that people were seen moving along the streets, most shops in Onitsha were closed.
All major markets, such as Onitsha Main Market, Ochanja Market, Head Bridge Market, and the Building Materials Market, were closed.
Policemen and other security personnel were reportedly deployed in every nook and cranny of the city as part of ways of maintaining law and order.
Many of the traders, who spoke to journalists, said they did not want to resume on the first day of the decree, even as they said the Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s move to make Mondays commercial activities in every part of the state was not bad.
Governor Soludo was also reportedly moving from one market and other places to the other assessing level compliance, such places like: Nkwo Igbo-Ukwu, Afor Nnobi, Upper Iweka and other parts of Nnewi.
During this visit, he discussed with traders and citizens the importance of restoring economic activities while putting in place measures for safety.
