ASUU Threatens Strike Over Unfulfilled Agreements with Federal Government

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced a potential strike within the next two weeks if their agreements with the Federal Government remain unmet.

Comrade Happiness Uduk, the Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Calabar Zone, made this declaration during a press conference and protest held at Abia State University’s Uturu Main Campus.

Uduk highlighted that several agreements between ASUU and the Federal Government have not been honored, resulting in significant challenges for the academic staff and the broader educational sector. Key issues include lack of salary increments, unpaid salary arrears, inadequate funding for universities, and the non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances.

ASUU has also rejected the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) and the introduction of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) at Abia State University. Additionally, the union condemned the victimization of its members at Ebonyi State University (EBSU).

The union expressed deep concern over the eroding value of lecturers’ monthly wages due to the rising cost of living in the country. ASUU also opposed the Federal Government’s student loan package, arguing that it would further burden students.

“Universities will be shut down for academic activities in the next two weeks. Please take the message to them,” Uduk warned.

Dr. Chidi Mba, Chairman of ASUU at Abia State University, also spoke at the event, reiterating the rejection of the Treasury Single Account. He revealed that lecturers are owed between 11 and 14 months of salaries, with some workers experiencing salary cuts. Mba urged the Abia State Government to increase funding for the university.

The Calabar Zone of ASUU comprises seven universities: University of Calabar, University of Uyo, Alex Ekwueme University, Abia State University, Ebonyi State University, and Akwa Ibom State University.
