The Canadian government has issued an update to its United States travel advisory, cautioning citizens to anticipate increased scrutiny by U.S. border authorities.
The advisory, titled ‘Information on Scrutiny at Border Points,’ reminded travelers that the decision to grant entry lies solely with the country they are visiting.
“The Government of Canada cannot intervene on your behalf if you do not meet entry or exit requirements for the United States,” the advisory states.
The update emphasized that U.S. border agents have broad discretion when determining whether to admit or deny entry and that they enforce all requirements strictly.
“Expect scrutiny at ports of entry, including of electronic devices,” the advisory notes. “Comply and be forthcoming in all interactions with border authorities.”
It further warned that travelers who are denied entry may be detained while awaiting deportation. Additional caution is advised for those traveling with a temporary passport or an emergency travel document, as different rules may apply.
The update also included general travel precautions for Canadian citizens, covering topics such as crime, criminal tactics, gun violence, home break-ins, hiking safety, public demonstrations, fraud, and terrorism.
Separately, the U.S. government has announced that beginning April 11, foreign nationals visiting for more than 30 days must register or risk facing penalties, including fines or misdemeanor charges.
This requirement specifically applies to those entering the U.S. via land borders. Travelers arriving by air are generally required to complete the I-94 admission form upon entry.
