A cholera outbreak has been reported in Yola North Local Government Area of Adamawa State, leaving about seven persons dead and 71 others hospitalized.
The National Emergency Management Agency, in a statement made available on its X page on Tuesday, said a recent flood contaminated the drinking water sources in the villages leading to the cholera outbreak.
It said another 100 persons were equally under observation and monitoring.
It added, “The National Emergency Management Agency has responded to a suspected cholera outbreak in Yola North LGA of Adamawa State, affecting the communities of Alkalawa, Doubeli, Rumde, and Gwadabawa.”
It said, “While 71 persons have so far been hospitalized as of September 16, 2024, over a hundred were under observation, amid seven confirmed deaths.”.
It explained that the outbreak was due to a recent flood disaster which contaminated the major source of drinking water, adding that due to overflow at the isolation centre, some patients were being moved to the Federal Medical Center.
NEMA had said it collaborated with the state government to put in place palliative measures to alleviate the impact of the disease.
It said NEMA and the Adamawa State government have made emergency responses to curtail the spread of the sickness, which includes chlorinating toilets and water treatment.
It added that NEMA also conducted community education to raise awareness about the disease and that it was closely monitoring the situation and collaborating with stakeholders to ensure timely intervention.
