Fire Erupts at Onitsha Main Market

A fire outbreak occurred early Friday morning at the Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State, Nigeria, causing panic among traders and residents in the area.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire started at around 6:20 a.m. in one of the market buildings and quickly spread to an adjacent structure. While the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, efforts are underway to contain the blaze and prevent further damage.

Passersby, residents, and officials of the Anambra State Fire Service were seen working together in a desperate effort to salvage goods and protect nearby properties.

Confirming the incident, the Head of the Media and Publicity Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service, Chukwudi Chiketa, issued a brief statement:

“Anambra State Fire Service is currently on intervention at the scene of the fire outbreak at Ifejika Street, by Sokoto Road, Onitsha.

The distress call came at 0620am today, and our firefighters deployed immediately.

The public is advised to remain calm as the situation is under control,” he added.

As firefighters continue their operations, traders and residents remain hopeful that most of the goods and properties can be saved. Further investigations are expected to determine the exact cause of the fire.
