Following the recent increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit, transportation fares in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, have gone up by at least 50%.
This is coming as the price of petrol in some Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited retail outlets and independent marketers filling stations in Abuja has risen from N617 to over N1000.
The development has increased the cost of transportation in the nation’s capital.
Abuja resident Bala Muhammed said the route from Kubwa to Bannex Bridge cost N1000 just like the former price of N500.
Another public servant, Adeola Adebayo, said she paid N1500 up from Berger Junction from Zuba as opposed to the usual charge of N1,000.
“The increase in the price of petrol has had an effect on the fare. Today, I paid Berger N1,500 from Zuba as opposed to the former price of N1,000,” she said.
The Secretary of the Zuba chapter of the NURTW, Ismaila Danjuma, blamed the hike in transportation fares on an increase in fuel prices.
This comes as the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria warned that the latest increase in pump price will heighten Nigeria’s inflation rate that was 33.40 percent in July.
Earlier, the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress urged an immediate reversal of the recent fuel price increase.
Remember, when the subsidy on fuel was removed in June 2023, the transportation and cost of goods and services were highly expensive.
