British Police have confirmed that the fire incident causing an 18-hour closure at Heathrow Airport last week is no longer considered suspicious or criminal.
Heathrow, Europe’s busiest airport, was forced to shut down operations on Friday after a nearby substation fire disrupted its power supply, affecting over 200,000 passengers and costing airlines millions of pounds.
This incident raised significant concerns about the robustness of UK infrastructure.
Initially, the London Metropolitan Police’s counter-terrorism unit was tasked with investigating the cause of the fire due to the severity of its impact.
However, in an update on Tuesday, the police stated they had found no criminal intent behind the incident.
“Following enquiries to date, officers have found no evidence to suggest that the incident was suspicious in nature,” the police statement said.
Both Heathrow Airport and the UK government have initiated reviews to investigate the incident thoroughly, as the airport and National Grid, which owns the affected substation, continue to defend their responses to the emergency.
