The Nigerian House of Representatives has approved President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s tax reform bills after months of debate and controversy.
Presidential spokesperson and Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, confirmed the development in a statement posted on his official X account on Thursday.
“Tax reform bills have been approved by Nigeria’s House of Representatives today in Abuja. Today, March 13, 2025,” he said.
The passage of the bills follows significant opposition, particularly from the Northern Nigeria Governors’ Forum, which rejected the proposed value-added tax (VAT) derivation model outlined in the Nigeria Tax Bill.
Additionally, the National Economic Council opposed the tax derivation model, further fueling debates over the legislation.
It can be recalled that on October 3, 2024, President Tinubu sent four tax reform bills to the National Assembly, including the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, the Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill.
Despite months of contention, the approval of the tax reform bills marks a significant step in Tinubu’s economic policies, setting the stage for potential shifts in Nigeria’s tax administration and revenue framework.
