Barrister Donald Mbamah, aged 64, has been arrested by the Imo State Police Command for shooting a 16-year-old student, Paul Victor, on March 17, 2025.
The shooting took place at Mbamah’s home in Area N, World Bank, New Owerri, at about 12:34 PM, said a press statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Henry Okoye.
The victim, an Urban Development Secondary School student, was allegedly shot on the buttocks under circumstances yet to be determined, the statement added.
Okoye further stated that police men of the New Owerri Division, under the command of the DPO, reacted immediately to a distress call by a concerned neighbour who overheard the gunshot.
“They arrived at the scene, apprehended the suspect, and rushed the victim, Paul Victor, to General Hospital, Umuguma, for treatment. Despite efforts to save him, the victim was confirmed dead on March 20, 2025,” the PPRO further added.
The spokesperson of the Command also revealed that Barrister Mbamah was led to the State Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for questioning following the incident.
He claimed that a thorough investigation is underway, and the police are attempting to track down the accused weapon involved in the crime.
The State Police Command also seized the opportunity to condole with the family and friends of the deceased and assure the public that justice will be pursued to the fullest extent of the law.
Okoye also said that legal action will be taken to arraign the suspect in court once investigations are completed and sufficient evidence has been gathered.
The Command equally appealed to members of the public not to take the law into their own hands and instead allow the police and mandated authorities to handle the matter in accordance with the law.
