Jos School Building Collapse: 22 Dead, 132 Injured

The Plateau State Government announced 22 deaths and 132 injuries in the collapsed Jos school building.

Musa Ashoms, the Commissioner for Information, stated that six of the injured were in critical condition.

Ashoms stated that those injured were being treated at various tertiary health facilities throughout the state, while the bodies of the deceased had been deposited in mortuaries.

NAN reports that a two-story structure at Saints Academy, a secondary and elementary school in the Busa-Buji town of Jos North Local Area, collapsed, trapping pupils, teachers, and others.

The event occurred at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, as the students were writing their third-term exam.

Meanwhile, Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has termed the occurrence as a devastating and tremendous loss for the state.

Mutfwang revealed this in a statement published by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Mr Gyang Bere, in Jos on Friday.

The governor expressed sympathy for the families of the victims and termed the situation as tragic and unfortunate.

“This is a dreadful, unfortunate, heartbreaking, and depressing circumstance. We applaud the prompt response of the search-and-rescue team, as well as members of the public, who raced to the school grounds to help evacuate some of the surviving children and staff,” he said.
