Ogun State Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, has emphasized that true leadership transcends gender, highlighting that it is more about service, vision, integrity, and creating opportunities for others.
Speaking as a panelist on the topic “Dare to Dream: Women in Politics and Legislative Leadership” at an event titled “The Nigerian Women’s Day, 30 Years of Progress, Resilience, Impact, and Renewed Hope”, organized by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs in New York, USA, Salako-Oyedele underscored the importance of inclusivity in governance.
She explained that in her role as deputy governor, she remains committed to leveraging her position to empower women and young people, ensuring that government policies address the real needs of citizens.
Salako-Oyedele further noted her active efforts in promoting the inclusion of women and youth in political spaces while also advocating for female leaders and appointees across different levels of governance.
Highlighting the role of mentorship in leadership, she shared that maintaining strong relationships with her female predecessors and other prominent women in politics has significantly helped her navigate the challenges of public office.
According to her, “Such guidance as I have received from those who have gone before me has reinforced my belief in the importance of building a pipeline of future leaders, both men and women.”
Recognizing the challenges women face in leadership, she acknowledged that persistence and collaboration are key to creating lasting change, adding, “The road is not easy but if we continue to support each other, build strong networks, and push for meaningful inclusion, the landscape will change.”
Salako-Oyedele also pointed out that Ogun State continues to demonstrate the positive impact of women in leadership, stating that when women hold positions of power, communities experience growth and development. While politics is often seen as a contest for power, she expressed that her focus has always been on service, uplifting others, and supporting Governor Abiodun’s vision.
Encouraging individuals in public office to remain grounded, she warned against the distractions of political praise-singers, stressing that politics is demanding and requires honest feedback. She urged leaders to surround themselves with individuals who will speak the truth, even when it is difficult to hear.
