The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has sealed the Gomboru drug market in Maiduguri, Borno State, over illicit drug dealings.
The illicit dealings include washing and sun-drying of fake medicines to sell out after the devastating flood that hit the state.
According to reports, the Maiduguri flood disaster was caused by the collapse of the Alau dam on the Ngadda River, 20 kilometers south of Maiduguri.
At least 30 persons have been so far killed by the severe flooding, while forcing 400,000 others from their homes.
The agency made this known in a post on its X handle, explaining that it ordered the closure of the drug market after recent flooding submerged the market and contaminated the drugs.
“After the recent flooding in Maiduguri that submerged the Gomboru drug market where contaminated drugs were washed and sun-dried for resale, the @DGatNAFDAC ordered the immediate closure of the market to conduct a thorough shop-to-shop removal of these compromised drugs,” NAFDAC wrote on its verified Twitter handle.
However, the agency has not confirmed how many people have died from the drug. The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, said through its spokesman Ezekiel Manzo, the death toll was 30.
