The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) generated N1.02 trillion at its Apapa Area Command during the first half of the year.
Babatunde Olomu, Customs Area Controller for Apapa Command, confirmed this at a news conference in Lagos on Monday.
He stated that the amount represented a 143% rise from the N421.38 billion produced during the same time in 2023.
Olomu emphasized that the agency’s efforts to promote and facilitate commerce are producing major effects.
“Our efforts have been mainly targeted at preventing revenue losses, improving ease of doing business, and engaging stakeholders,” he stated.
He pointed out that the instruction generated the amount despite a significant drop in transaction volume.
“We have implemented measures to prevent government revenue loss by using a blend of intelligence and community relations,” according to him.
Olomu stated that during the review period, the command captured 11 containers of regulated products worth N424 million, including expired medications, illicit goods, and frozen birds, compared to 42 seizures with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N1.4 billion in 2023.
“These seizures were made from dishonest importers attempting to smuggle goods into Nigeria,” he claimed.
According to the News Agency, the command detected a considerable quantity of outdated and unlicensed medications in three 40-foot containers.
It also revealed three 40-foot containers containing 7,580 cartons of frozen poultry products that were unsafe for human consumption.
Olomu added that the smuggled commodities breached Schedule Three of the Common External Tariff’s amended import restriction list, as well as Section 233 of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023.
