The Bauchi State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mrs. Rifkatu Yakubu, has advised outgoing female Corps members to return to their families upon completing their national service rather than moving in with their boyfriends.
Yakubu made this heartfelt appeal on Thursday during the official distribution of discharge certificates to the 2024 Batch ‘A’ Stream II Corps members in Bauchi State.
Addressing the young women directly, she emphasized the importance of celebrating this milestone with their loved ones.
“Ladies, please remember that your boyfriends are not your parents. Do not say that after collecting your certificates, you are heading to your boyfriends’ houses.”
“Go back home to your parents and celebrate with them. You have just completed your national service, and this is a moment to share with your family.”
Beyond her guidance on post-service decisions, the NYSC State Coordinator also encouraged Corps members to take full advantage of skills acquired during the service year, especially through the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme.
“Even if you haven’t learnt anything from the SAED programme, it’s not too late. Instead of going home to sit idle, find something to do to support your parents. Use this last allowance wisely; invest in learning a trade,” she said.
She also issued a strong warning against illegal ventures in pursuit of quick wealth, including internet fraud, kidnapping, and ritual killings. Yakubu urged Corps members to channel their energy into productive and legal means of livelihood.
Furthermore, she advised all graduates to thoroughly check their National Service certificates for any errors before laminating them to avoid issues in the future.
A total of 1,652 Corps members completed their national service in Bauchi State, including 1,118 males and 534 females, marking the end of a transformative journey for the batch.
