According to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the national grid was restored at approximately 9.57 p.m. on Saturday, following a partial breakdown.
TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, said in an Abuja statement on Sunday that the grid experienced a minor disruption at around 3.09 p.m. on Saturday.
She noted that operators began restoration efforts immediately following the incident, noting that “at approximately 9.57 p.m. on Saturday, the entire affected portion of the grid was successfully restored.”
“The system disturbance, which brings the total number of partial grid disturbances to three in 2024, is likely to have been caused by the sudden tripping of three power generation units.
“It suddenly removed 313 Megawatts from the grid, causing system instability that led to the loss of bulk supply to a section of the national grid.”
Mbah added that the system operator responded to the unexpected drop in generation, which caused a decrease in frequency.
She stated that the system operator accomplished this by isolating a piece of the grid, which included the Ibom Power Station, allowing the firm to continue to feed Uyo, Aba, Itu, Eket, Calabar, and other locations even when the other sector of the grid was out of service.
