United States President Donald Trump is set to sign executive orders on Tuesday aimed at boosting the country’s coal industry.
According to the White House, Trump—who campaigned on promises to expand U.S. energy production and roll back environmental regulations—will sign the energy-related orders at 3 p.m. (1900 GMT).
The executive orders will direct the Interior and Energy Departments to take specific actions to support the coal industry, including measures designed to prevent the closure of coal plants deemed at risk of retirement.
At the beginning of the century, coal accounted for more than half of U.S. power generation, according to the Energy Information Administration. However, the sector has since seen a significant decline amid the rise of alternative energy sources and stricter environmental regulations.
Trump, a Republican, has frequently criticized Democrats for imposing environmental rules that he argues have unfairly targeted the coal industry. He previously hinted at plans to support coal producers earlier this year.
