UNIBEN Students Trapped as Building Collapses Amid Heavy Rain in Benin

No fewer than many students of the University of Benin, UNIBEN, were reportedly trapped in a storey building said to have collapsed in the state.

Sahara Reporters reported that the incident occurred on Ekhator Street, Ekosodin, an area dominated by students’ hostels.

The building collapsed on Saturday morning in Benin City, Edo State, following a heavy rain downpour.

At the time this report was filed, rescue operation was ongoing.

According to one of the students, who wished anonymity, “some of those inmates were freed by a university rescue team though some were seriously injured.”

He explained that the injured were rushed to hospital for medication.

“The rescue team is still searching for one victim said to be trapped inside the wreck. The victim was said to have screamed for help from inside the building, and attempts are still being made to locate and bring him out, as verified by the student.

The Dean of Students at UNIBEN is said to be at the scene, coordinating the rescue operation with the university staff.

By the time of filing this report, the management of the university was yet to issue any statement on the cause of the collapse or the general number of people who suffered the impact.
