Following the (NLC) Nigeria Labour Congress’s strike in the state, business operations have been suspended in the capital city of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
As directed by the national body, the NLC, Akwa Ibom Chapter went on an indefinite strike on Monday, June 3.
According to Sunny James, the union’s chairperson, employees in the state will guarantee strict enforcement until the federal government accedes to their requests over the increased minimum wage.
The NLC Akwa Ibom Chapter will guarantee complete adherence to all national regulations. We’ll visit every office in the state to carry out the instruction. He stated.
When visited on Monday, government offices at several places, including as the Federal Secretariat along Abak Road, the Dakkada Secretariat on Udo Udoma Avenue, and the Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat, were all locked.
Labor representatives were spotted dancing and playing drums at the state secretariat. Security personnel were also on standby, along with an OPR truck.
Following the nationwide walkout called by the NLC and its affiliate unions, public institutions, banks, and other government entities that are not part of the secretariat have closed.
All of the banks in the banking zone at the Udo Udoma banking layout were closed, and consumers were seen hanging about because they were unable to enter the banking halls to conduct business.
Though Akwa Ibom is known for being a civil service state, merchants complained of little to no sales today as a result of the strike, despite the fact that markets and all other commercial operations in the state were open.
The TUC Chairman, Mr. Dominic Abang, responded to the strike by saying that all labor unions in the state had joined it and that it was comprehensive.
Nonetheless, schools and students presently taking the West African School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) at various testing locations throughout the state are not subject to the strike, according to the state leadership of the NLC.
The Akwa Ibom State State Secretary for Organized Labor, Alpha Marshall, signed a press release issued by the union stating that the strike will not have an impact on exam supervisors or school principals who oversee exams.
The pupils who are currently taking the WASSCE at various examination centers throughout the state would not be impacted by the NLC and TUC’s nationwide indefinite strike.
He said, “The exam will proceed as scheduled due to the previously mentioned reason, so please take note, school principals, exam supervisors, parents/guardians, and the general public.”
