Yobe Assembly Recommends Earth Dam Projects to Support Farmers and Reduce Flood Impact

Yobe State House of Assembly has urged the executive to engage in the construction of more earth dams to exploit copious rainwater for irrigation and farming purposes.

The House made the demand in a motion on urgent public concern introduced by members representing Bade West and Geidam Central, Hon. Bukar Mustapha and Hon. Sanda Kara Bade respectively along with other members of the House.

Members who spoke copiously on the necessity of dam construction maintained that the facility will contribute to farmers engaging in irrigated farming as well as reduce the hardship occasioned by the flood which destroyed and devastated many farm fields and properties estimated worth millions of naira.

Meanwhile, the House received a report from its standing committee on works on the first and second quarter 2024 budget performance of the ministry of works and its agencies.

The report was presented by the chairman of the committee, Hon. Adamu Dala Dogo, who explained that the committee had undertaken oversight visits to sites for ongoing road construction and restoration as well as drainage at various places with a view to ensuring that quality projects were carried out at all levels.

Dogo added that the committee has ordered the state ministry of works to demand that all contractors who finished their projects fix some potholes on the roads before they get their retention fees.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Chiroma Buba Mashio presided over the meeting and commended the committee for a good job done, entreating members to go through the report for possible consideration in the next parliamentary session.
