Zelenskyy Appoints Andrii Hnatov as Ukraine’s New Chief of General Staff

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed Andrii Hnatov as the new Chief of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, replacing Anatoliy Barhylevych.

According to Ukraine’s Defence Minister, Rustem Umerov, the leadership change is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s military structure. Barhylevych had only assumed the role in February last year.

Announcing the decision on Sunday, Umerov stated, “We are systematically transforming the Armed Forces of Ukraine to enhance their combat effectiveness. This involves restructuring the command system and implementing clear standards.”

Despite the leadership shift, Umerov confirmed that Barhylevych remains “part of the team” and will now focus on “reforming the main inspectorate.” His new role will involve ensuring compliance with military standards and reinforcing discipline within the armed forces.

Zelenskyy has consistently reshuffled military leadership as Ukraine continues to defend itself in the ongoing war with Russia.
