On Monday, the Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis passed away due to a stroke.
The Vatican announced that the Pope fell into a coma after suffering the stroke and ultimately experienced “irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse.”
Dr. Andrea Arcangeli, head of the Vatican’s health department, provided the details of the Pontiff’s cause of death in a statement.
In addition to the stroke, Dr. Arcangeli explained that Pope Francis was also battling pneumonia in both lungs, which caused episodes of respiratory insufficiency.
The Pope passed away at the age of 88 in his residence within the Vatican on Easter Monday.
His death came after more than two months of health struggles, during which he faced severe respiratory infections.
At times, he required high doses of supplemental oxygen and even underwent at least one emergency blood transfusion.
Pope Francis had been hospitalized at Gemelli Hospital in Rome for 38 days, after being admitted on 14 February for bronchitis.
