The Zamfara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has opened training for the first batch of 50 Community Protection Guards (CPGs).
Addressing reporters at the Command’s training field, Corps Commandant Sani Mustapha stated that the guards are being educated in security techniques.
He stated that they will be trained in self-defense, information collection, and sharing, and that following the training, hotline numbers will be made accessible to them for distress calls.
He ensured that the Corps would reply promptly.
“Considering the incessant security challenges in the state, they need to be trained to perfectly perform their constitutional responsibility,” the governor stated.
The Community Protection Guards (CPG) are a local security organization that protects both rural and urban regions in the state.
Mustapha stated that the Zamfara State NSCDC Command has devised strong measures to appropriately secure Gusau, the state capital, and emphasized that patrol teams are operating around the clock.
Speaking further, the NSCDC commandant stated that there are 38 Private Guard businesses (PGCs) in the state, and that the businesses always send their guards for training and retraining.
He further revealed that two of the PGCs refused to renew their licenses and were closed as a result.
Mustapha urged the public not to hire guards from unregistered PGCs, claiming that the majority of their staff are informants.
